“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my,” is now a big part of Daly City’s pet trick-or-treating experience. From cowboy to doctor to Wonder Woman and Superman, a wide variety of Halloween pet costumes are now available for dogs, cats, and owners, to enjoy.
The National Retail Federation’s 2017 Halloween Spending Survey states that pumpkins still win first place, when it comes to pet costumes, followed by hot dogs, lions and pirates.
At Nor Cal Vet, we want to pass along our favorite pet costumes. This season, keep on the lookout for any one of these special pet creations, strolling along our San Francisco streets, or feel free to purchase one or more of these pet costumes online or at a pet store near you:

Pikachu -with the popularity of Pokemon still going stong, Pikachu makes the popular list, as this Lillypet creation turns your pet into one Pokemon Go favorite. Featuring a comfortable, plush yellow suit, accented with black stripes, this costume includes a hoodie and ears. Watch out as little ones might want to chase and catch everyone’s favorite little cutie.
Prisoner – forget the doghouse, now you can have your very own prisoner with Casual Canine’s black and white prison outfit, complete with matching hat. Even the most mild-mannered pet will take on the toughest street persona with this adorable outfit.
The Pope – and what Halloween can take place without the Pope at the helm? This holy K-9 costume, also from California Costume Collections, comes complete with a gold-accented, white miter headpiece, along with a white body suit, red vest, gold paw-accented red sash and detachable stole. This costume will definitely catch the attention of friends and family.
Whatever costume you choose, remember to be sensitive to your pet. Always consider your pet’s temperament; some pets are more comfortable wearing a costume than others. However, know that pets can be lured into wearing a costume by introducing the costume early, using treats, letting the pet see the costume, then allowing time for the pet to smell and touch the costume. Then, lay the costume loosely over your pet until your pet feels comfortable enough to finally put the costume on.
Also remember that pet costumes should be simple and comfortable; nothing that cuts off circulation or hampers breathing. Be careful with accessories to avoid choking or suffocation. Pet costumes should include reflective tape. Avoid overheating your pet or having your pet wear a costume that is too heavy, and make sure your pet is tagged correctly.
